- Driving instructors will usually teach students the push and pull steering method however it is not a requirement to use the "push and pull" steering method on the Practical Driving Assessment (PDA). The WA Department of Transport will accept either "push and pull" or "hand over hand" methods of steering. You cannot steer with one hand or put your hand inside the steering wheel to turn.
2. No Blind Spot Checks
Most experienced drivers rely on their mirrors and not the blind spot. It is a requirement on the PDA that the candidate looks to their appropriate side blind spot anytime the vehicle diverges laterally by more than 1 meter. This includes going around parked cars, merging lanes, Lane changes, leaving the kerb and reversing maneuvers.

- 3. Coasting (manual cars)
- Coasting refers to pushing the clutch pedal in for longer than is necessary to perform an action. For example, coasting can be pushing the clutch pedal in at the same time as the brake is applied in preparation for stopping. The clutch pedal should only be depressed a few meters before stopping in most circumstances.
- Coasting is also failing to complete the gear change before turning a corner and having your clutch depressed while turning the corner. This action is dangerous because the driver has no ability to accelerate while the clutch is depressed and the vehicle could lose control.
